5-Fly Book Review – The Island Escape by Kerry Fisher

The Island Escape is a “feel good romantic comedy”. However, the first thing you’ll read both the cover and description are deceiving. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

If you’re like me, the cover will immediately take you to the tropics. Sorry. Wrong part of the world. Likewise, while there are several funny scenes and discussions, there are some very serious underlying messages in what Octavia and Roberta go through.

Octavia and Roberta have been best friends forever; completely different and each envious of the others marriage. At least in the beginning. They both quickly realize that, for completely different reasons, both are in failing marriages with husbands wrapped up in themselves: Scott, Roberta’s abusive, bullying husband that everyone hates and Jonathon, Octavia’s tech nerd husband who has become oblivious to Octavia’s existence.

Roberta’s marriage is the first to fall apart. As Octavia tries to support Roberta, she too begins to realizes how unappreciated and boring her life has become as she dreams about all the things she has missed out on. All the things she could have had if, years ago, she had not left the love of her life back in Italy.

As both marriages crumble, they each try to hang on for dear life before finally giving in to rebuilding their lives, as they hang onto each other for support.

I think you’ll find The Island Escape full of wonderful messages as two friends who are so different help each other rebuild their lives. Two friends that you can’t help fall in love with and cheer on as they struggle to first try to make their marriages work; then help each other to rebuild their lives.

Kerry Fisher has done an outstanding job of character building in this story that will have you laughing one minute and wanting to kill a husband or two the next. Like the characters, you’ll find yourself wondering where life will take them as Kerry twists and turns the plot so you’re not sure where she’s going until the very end.

An excellent story with characters you’ll love and a plot that will keep you guessing!
