An Emerging Threat falls under the sword and sorcery, fantasy genre. There are also mentions of steampunk.
I need to start by admitting that I am not a fan of fantasy. Why, because they all read the same and, An Emerging Threat did not disappoint me. There was absolutely nothing original about it.
The two main characters, Oliver and Ethan, each set out on parallel journeys to find the evil that is invading their land. Ethan, the disowned son of the king and Oliver a scholar. From the beginning, it is not clear that they both live in the same place (an Island) nor that they are both hunting the same thing as the author bounces back and forth between them.
Oliver, heads for the land of the goblins, where he is taken in and given guides to take him to the goal (sorry, I’m really not sure what it is) he is seeking. In the meantime, the king throws Ethan out and he fights his way across the northern frontier slaying misty-like creatures with some sort of steam power contraptions. (I think this was supposed to be the steampunk part.)
In the end …. well I can’t really give away the end since I’m not sure what happened. All of a sudden we ended up on a boat with a young waif stealing food?
Ugh, okay, enough! I found absolutely nothing interesting about this book. It had next to no plot and what little there was had been borrowed from about every fantasy book I’ve ever read. It also lists three editors, who must have been as bored as I was, because there are a ton of punctuation, sentence structure, and other errors throughout.
Add to that, next to no character development, unexplained actions on the part of all the characters and, if you read the books description you’ll surely think you read the wrong book.
My rating: Not worth reading.
