Book Review – Ben Brown’s Flying Machine by Michael Thorp

1 fly

Ben Brown’s story is one of rebuilding a life.  His father passed away leaving Ben and his mother trying to raise enough money to save their farm.

The spacecraft, Endeavor, crash landed on their farm.    An old man gets out and confronts Ben.

When NASA tracks the spacecraft to Ben’s farm the old man is no longer around.  No one knows what happened to him.

The old man apparently transferred some of his knowledge to Ben.  Ben is able to make a flying machine that takes him on some adventures that are out of this world. He uses his flying machine to make points with the girl of his dreams, win a science fair, and he runs into a planet of giants that want to take all the water on Earth.

My favorite part of the story was a fight between the giants and Ben in a Roman Empire coliseum type encounter. Ben is the underdog but wins the fight.

This story has potential. Some of the descriptions really perked the imagination and you could feel like you were part of the story itself, others left you wanting more. The story still needs some tweaking.

I felt like this was a first-read after the ideas were put to paper.  It would be helpful if some of the subplot lines were more developed.  Ideas were introduced but never quite fully developed and left you wondering what happened.  The main storyline itself was disjointed and hard to follow.
